The 27-year-old Bristol resident was working on a traffic signal from the bucket of his truck when the incident occurred Tuesday morning, said Sgt. Andrew Gallagher.
The worker, who was warning a safety harness attached to the safety bucket, was about 20 feet above the ground when the concrete truck driver misread directions from a police officer directing traffic and turned into the wrong, hitting the bucket truck, which then sent the worker flying, he added.
Off-duty police officers directing traffic on Greenwich Avenue had the northbound lanes closed while work was being done on the signal north of the railroad trestle, Gallagher said.
The accident occurred when an O&G truck traveling northbound on Greenwich Avenue was signaled to cross into the southbound lane, Gallagher said.
But because of limited visibility in the cab, the driver misread the officer's hand signals and drove through the intersection, striking the truck, he added.
The worker, who received injuries, was lowered down onto the truck by other workers.
The concrete truck driver was ticketed for failing to obey the signals of an officer in a construction zone, Gallagher said.
